CMGD: a golf course design partnership

Justin CARLTON started his professional career in 1999 and spent over 20 years shaping golf courses all over the world for the most recognized names and architects in the industry. Considered an ‘A’ shaper, Justin has the unique ability to bring a concept to fruition with his own hands “at the wheel”. Justin’s position was invaluable for a project’s success, which included how to manipulate the land to create a desired look, understanding conceptual limitations that promote playability and maintenance and approving the finish work of others. While most golf course architects provide plans, specifications, and field direction…a lead shaper is expected to interpret all information from a golf architect or client and turn the selected machine into a ‘paint brush’. Justin always knew how to ‘paint’……but now he is the ‘artist’. His experience allows CMGD to bridge the interpretation gap from design to construction. He now implements his own design philosophies into reality, and his extreme passion for the golf industry propelled the inevitable.
Starting at age 15, Lee MARSHALL experienced the process of golf course design and construction while working for a golf course builder during the summers. Possessing artistic skillset's and the love for the game he knew immediately that being a golf course architect was the right career path to take. With an academic scholarship to one of the top landscape architecture schools in the country, Lee graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Design. During his internship, he accepted a design associate position with Greg Norman Golf Course Design. For 10 years Lee traveled the globe designing new golf courses for GNGCD then recognized an opportunity to start his own design business. After resigning from GNGCD in 2014 he created Lee Marshall Golf Design and assisted a Florida local architect, Kipp Schulties, as an independent contractor. Lee spent 7 years working on major course renovations primarily in Florida. After 17 years of design experience he knew it was time to take another step and partnered to create Carlton Marshall Golf Design.

Carlton and Marshall were raised in the golf course industry from an early age patiently learning at the highest levels. Their 40+ years of experience provide clients with a complete design package, which are fully produced and controlled by both Justin and Lee. Their abilities and services include presentations, site planning, consulting, drawings, specifications, CAD input, photoshop renderings, cut fill modeling, GPS as-built quantification, topographic mapping, drone photography, project management, field administration, and select feature shaping or design builds. Their ‘in-house’ approach enhances CMGD’s ability to be intimate with each project start to finish and provide an unchanging point of contact for the client. CMGD's experience ranges from new golf course designs to simple renovations both domestic and abroad.

design services.
"Elevate your project with our innovative design solutions. By blending creativity and functionality, we breathe new life into outdated designs, optimizing the experience and aesthetics. Our philosophy is simple: listen to the client's needs, understand the responsibilites, and promote their desires. Artistic architecture is our foundation"
Master Planning
Each project should be treated independently from the last. Our process starts with the membership, listening to opinions, and respecting their budget. We evaluate the site's characteristics and history to provide a full audit of potential issues, lost intent, and enhancement possibilities.
Illustrations
We consult with our client understanding each environment is different, and approach the project as a team on all aspects of the project. By creating slide show presentations, 2D renderings, and 3D imagery we are able to gain membership trust for design renovations, restorations, or redesigns.
Documentation
From the initial concept, we manage the projectas a whole by creating documentation necessary for permitting, bidding, and construction. Using CAD programs and GPS capabilities, we quantify the project before, during, and after to make sure we stay within budget.
Site Administration
To ensure the longevity of your facility we use best management practices, updated specifications, and design philosophies with course maintenance in mind. In order to be successful for the client we commit to personally being in the field for all approvals.
